Past Simple – Irregular Verbs

1. Read the passage “Love Tokens” and list the verbs in the simple past tense in the two columns: regular and irregular.

Love Tokens

The custom of offering presents as tokens of love began in the 1500s. The story goes that a young man in Wales asked a young woman to marry him, but she refused. He then painted a picture and gave it to her as a present. The girl liked the picture so much that she agreed to marry her fiancé. Soon the custom became popular, but few men could paint. That is why many men gave their girlfriends things they made out of wood. In the early 1600s somebody came with the idea of using coins as a symbol of affection. Men offered silver coins to their girlfriends and these became the love token that people know today in the U.S. Before, people made love tokens to commemorate births, deaths; at the same time artisans started to make jewellery from coins. Americans used both silver and gold coins as love tokens. The custom began before the Civil War and became popular in the late 1800s, but came to an end in the early 20^th century. Because of love tokens very few coins circulated, so in 1908 the government made it illegal. People never went back to the custom for two reasons. First, 20^th century coins had less buying power than 19^th century ones and secondly, their metallic value was nil. Today young men offer their fiancées diamond rings as engagement gifts.
